Gary's Story

I was in a Devizes supermarket buying a sandwich and I felt some strange tightening in my chest. A passer-by called 999 and some paramedics came to my aid. Everyone was so calm that I didn’t realise what a severe situation I was in until after it had all happened.

The crew were all amazing; if I had known how serious things were I would have panicked and made my situation worse.  I didn’t realise I had had a heart attack until the paramedic told me.

I was air lifted to Frenchay Hospital and en-route Richard the Wiltshire Air Ambulance paramedic was able to diagnose a heart attack using specialist equipment that they have on the helicopter: a Lifepac 12 defibrillator. This equipment enabled the Paramedic to continuously monitor my heart whilst in the air; I was later told that the information was being sent directly to consultants at the Bristol Heart Institute.  That day I got rapid access to the most effective treatment available.  This undoubtedly saved my life.

I had a lifesaving operation just two hours after the 999 call was made.

The crew saved my life that day and I can never thank them enough.  The Wiltshire Air Ambulance charity is vital.
