Cheryl Johnson - Head of Capital Appeal

What’s your role within the charity? Head of Capital Appeal

When did you join Wiltshire Air Ambulance? October 2013

Tell us a little bit about your role: I’m responsible for leading on all fundraising and marketing activities involved with our New Home Capital Fundraising Appeal – we are looking to build a new £5.1m home for our aircrew, helicopter and charity teams so we can continue to provide this lifesaving service.

Currently our aircrew, helicopter and equipment are housed at our Operations Centre at Police HQ in Devizes. Our lease and agreement with Wiltshire Police expires at the end of 2017, so this provides the charity with a unique opportunity to look to the future and relocate to a new purpose built-base for the air ambulance, aircrew and charity team.

In the long run, bringing our operations and charity teams together in one building for the first time, will improve the service we offer and make it possible to expand our services in the future – something that is impossible from our current operational base. We want to build the best possible new home that sensible money can buy.

Thanks to an incredibly generous donation by a long-standing supporter, we are most of the way towards raising the £5.1m we need to buy the land, build our new base and fit it out to the latest standards. But we still need to raise £1.25m  (on top of £3.25m per year operating costs) by December 2017 to make our new home a reality.  We hope that businesses, county-wide groups and organisations,  grant making trusts and our amazing family of supporters across Wiltshire will all rally round and help us raise the money we still need for essential medical and helicopter equipment and fixtures and fittings.  Wiltshire deserves nothing less than a truly excellent air ambulance service so that as many lives as possible can be saved,  and an excellent air ambulance services needs a full fit-for-purpose base for its operations and charity teams.

So I have a very challenging,  but truly exciting role. It’s a privilege to be part of such a great project that will make such a big difference to helping to save lives for many  more years to come.

What do you love about your job? Wiltshire Air Ambulance is a great cause, it’s there for everyone and makes such a difference to helping save people’s lives. We’re a small, close knit team - it’s like being part of an extended family. My role is incredibly rewarding and it’s a good feeling when I come home from work knowing that, in some small way, I’ve helped to make a difference. I really love my job and am very passionate about the fantastic work that the air ambulance crew and the charity team do. I’m also very humbled by the amazing fundraising people do to support their local air ambulance.

Tell us an interesting fact about yourself: I beat a silver Olympic medal winner over 80m hurdles (when I was considerably younger and fitter!)
