Wiltshire Air Ambulance's Christmas Raffle Won by First Time Player

A FIRST time player of our Grand Christmas Draw won the first prize of £3,000.

Derek Massie, of Farley, Salisbury, and his wife, Sandra, are going to use the winnings towards attending the wedding of their niece in Sweden.

Derek, a retired marine industry service mechanic, said: “This was the first time I had taken part in Wiltshire Air Ambulance’s Grand Christmas Draw and I was shocked to be told that I won the first prize! The win came on the same day that I received a letter from my niece inviting us to her wedding in Sweden. This win will go towards us being there on her special day. “

Derek, who has one son and four grandchildren, is a supporter of our charity and has played the charity’s Lottery for the past two years.

He added: “Wiltshire Air Ambulance is a good cause. The rural setting of Wiltshire means it can take longer to travel by land ambulance, but the speed of Wiltshire Air Ambulance’s helicopter can be crucial in getting to and transporting seriously ill or injured people to hospital.”

The third prize of £100 was won by Colin King, of Swindon, who has donated it back to Wiltshire Air Ambulance.

Colin, a carpenter of Rodbourne, said: “My dad, Aubrey King, used to support Wiltshire Air Ambulance and when he passed away we raised money for Wiltshire Air Ambulance at his memorial service. I didn’t expect to win on the Grand Christmas Draw so I’ve donated the money back to the charity for it to continue its lifesaving work.”

The Grand Christmas Draw has raised more than £56,000 for us. Of this, over £44,400 was from raffle tickets sold while additional donations of over £11,900 were received. The additional donations were more than £8,200 for the charity’s essential running costs and over £3,700 for the new airbase at Semington, near Melksham.

The winning ticket numbers and locations were:

1st Prize (£3,000): 298320 – Salisbury; 2nd Prize (£500): 195321 – Chippenham; 3rd Prize (£100): 079503 - Swindon; five consolation prizes of £50: 048448 – Bradford-on-Avon; 219441 – Swindon; 408433 – Bristol; 154219 – Bristol; 185544 – Calne.

Rhys Parker, Senior Fundraising Manager at Wiltshire Air Ambulance, said: “We’d like to thank everyone who sold and purchased tickets for our Grand Christmas Draw and congratulate the lucky winners. We are also so grateful to those people who made additional donations towards our essential running costs and our Airbase Appeal.

“The draw is a vital source of income for us and the generous support we have received for it will enable our helicopter and crew to keep flying and saving lives.”
