Friday 1st January 1448hrs
Whilst on Police task, overheard reports of 4 persons in a river just outside of Bath having capsized in a canoe. Offered assistance and whilst en-route advised aircraft not required as all persons were accounted for.

Friday 1st January 1502hrs
Requested by ground unit to assist with female who had fallen over. Possible fracture/dislocation of the ankle, rural location, freezing temperatures, person on the ground, unable to move. Landed at scene and assisted crew in dealing with patient before transferring patient to SDH – transfer time of 6mins from a rural location.

Saturday 2nd January 1310hrs
Requested by ground crew to transport elderly patient from the Devizes area. Crew brought patient to ASU, suffering from extreme hypothermia coupled with very low BP and pulse. Patient flown to RUH - transfer time of 10mins.

Sunday 3rd January
The aircraft was deployed to a horse riding accident to the west of the county. The aircraft was at scene within 8 minutes and treated a female with neck and facial injuries. She was stabilised by the Paramedic on scene and then transported to Bath hospital with 5 minutes.

Sunday 3rd January
The aircraft was requested to attend a rugby accident in Calne. On landing at the scene they treated a casualty who was complaining of instant neck pains after he had hyper-extended his neck and had heard a cracking sound. They transported him to hospital within 9 minutes.

Wednesday 6th January
The aircraft was tasked to reports of a male in cardiac arrest to the east of the county. The aircraft was at scene within 7 minutes of the call and was the first medical resource at scene. After defibrillation and drug therapy was administered and pulse returned and a patient started to breath. He was loaded into the aircraft and flown the 10 minute flight to Salisbury Hospital.

Thursday 7th January  
The aircraft was requested to attend a sledging accident in the south of the county, they were informed the accident had happened a mile from any main road. On scene they were informed by the ambulance crew the patient had sustained a severe fracture to her leg. The patient was administered pain relief and flown to hospital within 11 minutes.

Friday 8th January 1556hrs
The aircraft self tasked to reports of a serious 2 vehicle road traffic collision on the A303 south of Wiltshire. At the scene they dealt with a casualty who had sustained head and leg injuries. He was stabilised at scene and flown within five minutes to hospital.

Friday 8th January 1750hrs
The aircraft was tasked to reports of a child with severe breathing problems. The aircraft was at scene within minutes of the call and administered asthma medication to the patient. He was then transported to Swindon hospital within 12 minutes for further treatment.

Saturday 9th January 1448hrs
The aircraft was tasked to reports of a male fallen from a sledge and was about 1 mile from the road. We landed on scene within 12 minutes, spinally immobilised the patient and flew to Swindon hospital. We were at hospital in 3 minutes.

Saturday 9th January 1540hrs
The crew were asked to attend another sledging accident. We were the first medical resource at scene arriving within 6 minutes of the call. We dealt with a child who had sustained a severe leg laceration. As the patient was on a hill side 3 miles from the road and his injury weren’t serious we flew him to a waiting ambulance.

Saturday 9th January 1641hrs
We received a crew request to attend another sledging accident in the south of the county. We arrived on scene within 10 minutes and assisted the crew in dealing with the casualty who had sustained spinal injuries from falling off the sledge. We loaded him into the aircraft and flew him to Salisbury within 10 minutes.

Sunday 17th January 1415hrs
Called to the area of Milk hill Devizes to a lady in her 30’s who had experienced a heavy landing from whilst flying her hang glider.  The aircraft was the only ambulance resource at scene.  Patient treated for spinal and head injuries and flown to Salisbury hospital in 15 minutes.

Saturday 23rd January 2255hrs
Self tasked to RTC.  Male pedestrian in his 20’s hit by car on West Ashton Road in Trowbridge.  Patient with head injuries and chest injuries.  Patient flown to GWH in 10 minutes.

Monday 25th January
Night HEMS - tasked to a baby fitting. On crews arrival baby had stopped fitting but was still cyanosed. Mum and baby flown to GWH and baby picked up in flight.  Flight time 13 minutes.

Tuesday 26th January
Night HEMS - tasked to a cardiac arrest. Helicopter over the area when call came in at Swindon Town Football club. Helicopter landed and assisted with the arrest, patient then flown to GWH. Good flight in patient making some respiratory effort. Flight time 3 minutes.

Saturday 30th January 1120hrs   
Tasked to a 2 vehicle head on RTC at high speed. Female trapped, spinal tenderness, abdominal and hip pain.  Patient spinally immobilised, collared, and flown to RUH.  Transfer time 10 minutes.

Sunday 31st January 1245 hrs 
Crew asked to attend to a child short of breath in Dorset area.  Crew on scene treated and airlifted the patient with mother to SDH.  Transfer time 10 minutes.

November Incidents 2009

2nd November – 08:35
RTC involving a lorry which had plunged into hedge trapping the driver. Abdominal injury & complaining of back pain. Pain relief given, patient immobilized on long board & flown to RUH, transfer time 4 mins.

4th November - 08:45
Two vehicles, head-on entrapment RTC. One patient requiring full spinal immobilization. Injuries included a head injury & open fractures to the right lower leg with compromised circulation. Flown to SDH, transfer time 15 mins.

5th November – 11:35
RTC involving 3-wheel trike motorbike, struck by on-coming vehicle after negotiating a bend. The vehicle struck the motorcyclist on the right lower leg virtually amputating it below the knee. The patient was treated on scene with pain relief, fluid replacement & his leg splinted & flown to RUH, transfer time 5 mins.

11th November - 11:45
Female patient collapsed and in cardiac arrest on arrival of ground ambulance. CPR commenced, patient regained profusing heart rhythm and spontaneous breathing.  Helicopter requested for rapid transportation, patient airlifted to RUH taking just 12 minutes, continued medical assistance and monitoring carried out throughout flight.

11th November - 13:00
RTC, male cyclist fallen landing onto left side, complaining of left hip pain and showing signs of a fracture.  Pain relief given and patient monitored throughout and airlifted to RUH with flight time of 10 mins.

12th November - 09:13
Female found under approximately 40 bales of straw, having fallen onto her from height in a barn. Patient complaining of pain to back of head and neck, chest and back,  spinally immobilised and given medication, airlifted to Frenchay with flight taking just 4 minutes.

14th November - 08:45
2 vehicle RTC, lateral and frontal impact.  Patient, female passenger, complaining of left side and central chest pain and experiencing difficulty in breathing.  Full spinal immobilisation and medication administered, monitored throughout and airlifted to RUH, flight taking just 15 minutes.

16th November – 16:10
Serious RTC at Purton involving a bus and tractor in which the grabber aspect of the tractor was raised and sliced through the upper deck of the bus trapping a school girl. Crew assisted ground units in dealing with the patient and she was flown to GWH with L sided upper limb trauma. Transfer time of 5mins into GWH and was achieved due to link with Police as night time.
 
20th November – 08:55
Responded to reports of single vehicle RTC near Lyneham, male patient trapped with head injury. On arrival liaised with ground units in dealing with and extricating the patient before being loaded onto the aircraft. Rural location with a transfer time of 5 mins into GWH.
 
20th November – 12:53

Reports of a 12yr old child drowning at Trowbridge Leisure Centre, requested to attend and was at the incident within 7mins. WH99 not required as condition not as serious as first thought, ground units able to manage the situation.
 
22nd November – 09:30
Self tasked to reports of serious entrapment RTC on A36 near Codford, 2 vehicles involved in head on collision, 3 patients trapped. On arrival at rural location, liaised and worked with ground units in dealing with all 3 casualties. BASIC's also attended and following assessment and conferring with GP, male patient pronounced DOA at scene. Continued to assist other ground units with 2 other trapped patients with female driver being extricated after entrapment time of 1.5hrs. Patient flown to SDH and in A/E within 10mins from a rural location suffering from chest injury and fractured pelvis and multiply trauma to right leg. Weather conditions at the time were appalling with heavy rain and windy conditions at times.
 
22nd November – 15:00
Requested by ground unit to assist with 40yr old male who having fallen through the ceiling had suffered a serious mid shaft fractured femur along with fractured/dislocated ankle. Solo responder on scene first. Patient been waiting for transportation to A/E in excess of 1 hour. WH99 able to land close by in the village of Zeals and liaised with ground unit in dealing with the patient. Patient was flown to SDH being in A/E within 10mins.

25th November – 09:35
Patient fell 20’ off a ladder onto concrete sustaining a head injury with associated cerebral irritation. Flown to RUH, transfer time 5 mins .

30th November - 13:25
The aircraft was deployed to the west of the county to reports of an accidental overdose of tablets. The aircraft arrived at the scene within 10 minutes and conveyed in 5 minutes to hospital.

September Incidents 2009

04/09/09 16:07hrs - Tasked to a gent who had caught his arm with a 9inch angle grinder blade, open very deep laceration to his right forearm, blade had shattered and some was still in his arm, wound dressed and pain relief given. Flown to RUH, 12 minute flight time.

05/09/09 10:37hrs - Tasked to a female that was trying a horse before she decided if to buy it, the horse bucked and she went over the horse’s head and landed on her back onto tarmac, instant pain in her mid thoracic area, collared and long boarded and pain relief given. Flown to RUH, 8 minute flight time.

05/09/09 15:35hrs - Motor Cross event out of county. Two motorcycles had collided. Gent with spinal injury and varying levels of consciousness? Ko’d, long boarded and collared pain relief given to good effect. Flown to RUH, 7 minute flight time.

05/09/09 17:24hrs - Tasked to Littlecote House, Marlborough. 5month old difficulty in breathing, had heart surgery when born. When Rapid Response Vehicle arrived baby was blue. On arrival of WH99 decision was taken to fly to John Radcliffe as follow up treatment was at hospital. Good flight in which baby went to sleep, 11 minute flight time.

05/09/09 23:14hrs – Night time HEMS: report of a two vehicle head on RTC. Landed at scene and assisted ground crews with casualties. Two patients cleared by Basics Dr and 3 patients taken to hospital by ground crew - all from the same family.

07/09/09 16:05hrs - The aircraft responded to reports of a male been knocked over by a car. The aircraft arrived within 14 minutes of the call and conveyed a patient to Swindon Hospital with severe leg injuries. The transit time to hospital took 5 minutes.

09/09/09 11:20hrs - The aircraft was requested to attend a parachutist who had landed heavily. They were at scene within 5 minutes and flew a male with spinal injuries to Salisbury hospital within 5 minutes.

11/09/09 09:50hrs - The aircraft was requested to attend a female who had fallen down the stairs in the Trowbridge area. The aircraft arrived within 8 minutes and conveyed the patient to hospital in 11 minutes.

11/09/09 14:09hrs - The aircraft responded to a two vehicle road traffic collision in Westbury, where a vehicle had rolled trapping a casualty. The aircraft arrived within 7 minutes and the emergency services released the patient from the vehicle. They were flown to Bath hospital within 10 minutes.

13/09/09 12:27hrs – Atworth: young male fallen out of a tree approx 15-20ft hitting branches on his way down landing on his back on grass.  Helicopter first at scene treated and flown to RUH.  Flight time 7 minutes.

14/09/09 11:50hrs - Kington Langley: a male fallen out of a tree (tree surgeon) approx 15ft onto grass.  Spinal injury, long boarded and given pain relief to good effect. No change in flight - flown to RUH 7 minutes.

14/09/09 18:15hrs - Granbury Hill Manton: gent became entangled in barbed wire had been stuck approx 3hours.  Was hypothermic and in a difficult location for ground crew to get to. Small lacerations/puncture wounds. Gent flown to GWH in 7 minutes.

19/09/09 11:59hrs - Seend: two vehicle RTC.  Shunt male with central back pain and right sided tenderness to the pelvis area. Placed onto the long board and flown to RUH.  Flight time 10 minutes.

21/09/09 15:10hrs - Two vehicle RTC involving a car & motorcycle, the motorcyclist suffering serious chest injury. He was treated on scene & flown to RUH, transfer time 4 minutes.

23/09/09 12:49hrs - Cyclist riding down hill when a barrel rolled out of a driveway & knocked him off his bike. The male hit his head & ruptured a small artery. He was treated on scene with the assistance of a BASICS doctor & flown to Frenchay, transfer time 10 minutes.

24/09/09 16:45hrs - A ground crew attended an elderly female in a care home who had fallen over, striking her nose on a radiator and virtually slicing it off. They conferred with GWH who advised the patient would need to go to Frenchay for plastic surgery. As the location of the incident was on the eastern edge of the county & the distance involved the crew requested the aircraft. The patient was then flown to Frenchay.  Transfer time 22 minutes.

28/09/09 - Female patient fallen down stairs earlier, despite feeling okay at time of incident, felt unwell later and GP was called.  Patient then collapsed prior to GP arrival.  Patient airlifted to Frenchay with head injury. Flight duration 17 minutes.

29/09/09 - Male patient, motorcyclist, RTC with car.  Chest injury, fractures ribs and abdominal pain.  Pain relief administered, spinally immobilised and airlifted to RUH. Flight duration 4 minutes.

29/09/09 - Female passenger, 2 vehicle RTC.  Patient hit head on side window, complaining of severe neck pain.  Car roof cut off by Fire Service for extrication of patient.  Patient spinally immobilised and airlifted to SDH. Flight duration 6 minutes.

29/09/09 - Patient complaining of headaches and vomitting.  On arrival of land ambulance, patient diminished level of consciousness.  Air support requested by crew.  Medical interventions carried out and patient airlifted to RUH.  Flight duration 5 minutes.

August Incidents 2009

Sunday 2nd August - 13:04
The aircraft was tasked to the west of the county to reports of a motocross accident. The aircraft arrived within 10 minutes of the call. The casualty had fallen off whilst travelling at about 30MPH and had sustained a fractured dislocation to the tib and fib. Pain relief was administered and traction applied and the patient flown to Bath hospital in 6 minutes.

Monday 3rd August 3rd - 08:36
The aircraft was tasked to reports of a male in cardiac arrest. The aircraft arrived within 6 minutes and paramedic intervention was carried out on the patient. The patient was loaded into the aircraft and flown to hospital in 7 minutes.

Thursday 6th August - 17:25
The aircraft was deployed to the north of the county to a male with severe shortness of breath. The aircraft was at scene within 7 minutes of the call. The patient was stabilised before the flight to Swindon hospital, which took 9 minutes.

Sunday 9th August – 13:10
Parachutist at Netheravon Airfield experienced a flared chute early, causing him to land on posterior. The patient had a lumber spine injury & pelvic injury, probably fractured. He was given pain relief, immobilized with a pelvic splint & placed on a longboard, then flown to SDH, transfer time 6 minutes.

Tuesday 11th August – 15:20
Called to assist ground unit with a child in status epilepticus (continual fitting). The patient was brought to the aircraft at a pre-arranged location after receiving treatment at scene & flown to RUH, transfer time 8 minutes.

Thursday 13th August – 13:58
Attended to patient in a residential care home who had become unwell & then went into respiratory arrest. Landed in grounds of home & assisted crew with treatment which was to good effect in returning patient to spontaneous breathing. Flown to RUH, transfer time 7 minutes.

Friday 14th August – 12:40
Asked by ground crew to assist them with a patient in a remote location with difficult access, who had been working with a number of horses in a field when one of them galloped at her. The horse struck her & she was flung to the floor, knocking her out. She was also trampled by the horse. She was concussed on arrival of aircraft & was complaining of lower back pain & bruising to arms & legs. She was placed on a long board & flown to RUH, transfer time 10 minutes.

Monday 17th August - 16:35
Attended to a 5 year old child bitten by a large dog.  Extensive chest wounds sustained.  Patient was airlifted to Bath Royal United Hospital with trauma team and consultant paediatrician awaiting arrival of helicopter.  Transfer time of 10 minutes.

Tuesday 18th August - 08:50
Single vehicle road traffic collision; car barrel rolled 3 times landing on roof.  2 minor injured females and one trapped 13 year old female inside.  Fire and Rescue Service used rams and cutting equipment to free casualty.  Patient was spinally immobilised and airlifted to Salisbury District Hospital with extensive head injuries.  Transfer time of just 5 minutes.

2 year old male having fit.  Patient very hot, medication administered. Patient airlifted to Bath Royal United Hospital.  Transfer time 11 minutes.

Saturday 22nd August – 10:55
Male attacked by an Alpaca!!!! – believe male owns these. Bitten on arm down to the bone, patient reports feeling animals teeth grate along his bone, deep bite along with extensive tissue damage. Rural location ground crew requesting assistance of WH99, patient flown to RUH, transfer time of 10 minutes.

Saturday 22nd August – 15:25
Elderly male (cardiac history) stung in mouth by wasp suffering from an allergic reaction resulting in facial swelling, aircraft deployed due to a rural location south of the County. Patient given appropriate anaphylaxis medication and flown to RUH, being in A/E within 10 minutes, road trip would have taken 30 minutes plus.

Monday 24th August – 09:05  
Reports of a gable end wall of a cottage having collapsed and burying 3 builders. Aircraft deployed immediately to a rural location, assisted ground crews in dealing with the patients, young male suffering from a fractured leg/hip. Paramedic from WH99 assisted ground ambulance in transporting the patient to A/E.

Tuesday 25th August – 10:40   
Aircraft dispatched to rural airfield where military parachuting championships were taking place, reports of a male having sustained a heavy landing. Assisted ground units in dealing with the patient who had suffered a fractured arm and spinal injuries. Patient flown to specialist spinal hospital, being in A/E within 10minutes.

Assist Gloucester with patient with burns to face, hands and legs.  Pain relief and fluids given, and flown to specialist unit at Frenchay Hospital.  Time to hospital 22 minutes.

Serious road traffic accident - van v. motorcyclist v. van.  Medical interventions carried out at scene.

Sunday 12/7/09 15:49hrs
Requested to assist a ground unit at scene of a very elderly female 90+yrs who had suffered a fractured hip, required Paramedic at scene for additional pain relief. Despite IV pain relief, patient was still in a lot of pain, flown to Swindon and in A/E within 12 minutes.

Tuesday 14/7/09 18:25hrs
Requested to assist colleagues in Hampshire to reports of a 16yr old female haven fallen from a horse within the New Forest area – access problems for the land crew, Hampshire Air Ambulance not online. Assisted ground unit in long boarding the patient who is believed to have been unconscious for a short period following the initial fall. Patient was flown to Swindon District Hospital with a transfer time of 8 minutes.

Wednesday 22/7/09 15:59hrs
Request to assist Avon at Avon Valley Country Park Bitton with a witnessed arrest.  Good CPR was being performed by bystanders. Cardiac drugs had been given WH99 gave some more in which a profusing rhythm returned. Flown to the Royal United Hospital with a good output but still in respiratory arrest. No change in flight - 5 minute flight time to A/E.

Friday 24/7/09 17:36hrs
Request to attend a young child been knocked down by a car in Melksham. WAA Paramedic at scene also whilst in rapid response vehicle. Extensive bruising on right side of chest, various abrasions, collared and placed in vacuum mattress flown to Royal United Hospital. Good flight in - no change in flight. 10 minutes flight time to A/E.

Friday 24/7/09 18:30hrs
Crew request to assist with a 16yr male fall from a horse in Trowbridge area. He fell onto his head and hip complaining of ‘C’ spine tenderness with associated pins and needles. On aircraft arrival the pins and needles had eased, placed onto a long board and flown to Royal United Hospital. Good flight in - no change. Flight time 6 minutes to A/E.

Saturday 25/7/09 09:20hrs
Crew request for an elderly gent with Alzhimers that had been hit by a car in Ludgershall. Gent had fractures to lower left leg, head injury and knocked some teeth out. He was ready for transport to Swindon District Hospital. Reasonable flight in - Gent was slightly combative but no change in flight. 10 minute flight time to A/E.

Saturday 25/7/09 16:30hrs
Request to attend a road traffic accident on the Spine Rd Ashton Keynes. Single motorcyclist multiple injuries did have an output but now in arrest. CPR performed, drugs given and flown to Great Western Hospital. Good flight in - no change in patient’s condition. Flight time 10 minutes.

Tuesday 28/7/09 12:18hrs
The aircraft deployed to reports of a child fallen from a horse. The aircraft arrived on scene within 13 minutes and was the first ambulance to arrive on scene. The patient was assessed and treated for neck and arm injuries, then loaded into the aircraft and flown to hospital.

Tuesday 28/7/09 16:39hrs
The team self tasked to a three vehicle road traffic collision. The aircraft was at scene within 8 minutes of the time of call. They treated and conveyed a motorcyclist with spinal and arm injuries. The transit time for this was 9 minutes.

JUNE 2009

Monday June 1st – 1354hrs Requested by ground unit to attend to reports of a child collapsed at school with convulsions. Patient transported to A/E in a stable condition. Transfer time of 9 minutes from Warminster area.

Monday June 1st – 1842hrs Requested to assist colleagues in Avon having received reports of a serious 2 vehicle RTC, 1 vehicle on its side, patient ejected, 2nd vehicle on its roof. Liaised with ground units at the scene, multiple patients at the scene, male driver (ejected), flown to A/E with chest and abdominal injuries, transfer time of 5 minutes.

Wednesday June 3rd – 0903hrs Requested to attend Salisbury Plain Military Training area to reports of 2 vehicle incident, multiple casualties at scene. Young male with suspected spinal injuries flown to A/E, transfer time of 5 minutes.

Wednesday June 3rd – 1509hrs Requested to assist colleagues in Avon, 49yr old patient fallen through loft hatch, spinal and chest injuries, treated at scene and stabilised before being flown to A/E, transfer time of 4 minutes.

Thursday June 4th – 0045hrs Night time request by ground ambulance to convey patient to A/E following ruptured blood vessel in the neck, increased swelling noted around neck area. Patient transported to A/E in a stable condition, transfer time of 5 minutes.  Patient spent a day in ITU before being transferred to a more specialist hospital.

Thursday June 4th – 1236hrs First on scene with 24yr old parachutist, landed heavily on feet following failure to deploy main and reserve chutes correctly. Only GWAS medical resource at scene, patient assessed and treated before being flown to specialist spinal unit, transfer time of 7minutes. Confirmed fractures to lower spinal vertebrae and ribs.

Friday June 5th – 1843hrs Requested by Hampshire colleagues to assist with female fall from horse (their own aircraft not working after 1800hrs), patient stabilised at scene before being flown to specialist spinal unit. Rural location, transfer time of 12 minutes.

Thursday June 11th – 1319hrs Horse rider thrown after horse spooked.  First hit back on dry stone wall then thrown off, walked the horse to the stable then collapsed with the pain. RRV and us only ones on scene – long-boarded and flown to RUH. Transfer time 3 minutes.

Saturday June 13th – 1404hrs  RTC; Motorcyclist missed the bend and thrown from bike into the ditch.  Collared and long boarded as possible dislocation of the tibia. Pain relief administered and splinted.  Transfer time to GWH 7minutes.

Sunday 14th June – 1700hrs The aircraft responded to a crew request to a male with central chest pains. On arrival the patient was found to be having a heart attack. He was treated at the scene with a clot busting drug and flown to Salisbury hospital.  Transfer time 10 minutes.

Tuesday June 16th – 1631hrs Responded to a two vehicle accident involving a motorcycle and car. The motorcyclist sustained severe head and chest injuries. He was stabilised at the scene and flown to a neurological hospital within 13 minutes.

Thursday June 18th – 1035hrs Attended a scene where a male had suffered 35% burns from falling into his cooker. Burn dressings were applied and analgesia was administered for his pain. He was then flown to a burns unit 13 minutes from his house.

Saturday June 20th – 1542hrs Crew request to a female with severe abdominal pains. On arrival the female was suffering from acute left sided abdominal pain. The patient was administered analgesia and flown to hospital.

Monday June 22nd - 0952 Female fallen from horse suffering spine pain and concussion.  Airlifted to SDH and treated on route.  Transfer time 10minsutes.

Monday June 22nd – 1301hrs Filton aircraft unavailable so WAA called to a male trampled by cow, with severe back pain.  Patient airlifted to Frenchay and treated on route.  Transfer time 5 minutes.

Wednesday June 24th – 1314hrs Male received burns whilst carrying caustic soda, WH99 requested by RRV and patient airlifted to Frenchay.  Transfer time 10 minutes.

Friday June 26th – 1740hrs  12yr old male fallen from climbing frame approx 12ft.  Pain in back and pins and needles in leg.  Airlifted to GWH.  Transfer time 6 minutes.

MAY 2009

4th May – At 12:28 the aircraft was dispatched to a child who had fallen from a tree house. The aircraft arrived 5 minutes later where they were presented with a patient who had fallen about 3 meters onto his head. The patient was stabilised and spinally immobilised and then loaded into the aircraft. The patient was at hospital within 10 minutes.

4th May – At 15:35 the aircraft self tasked to a single vehicle road traffic collision involving a motorcycle. The aircraft was at scene within 4 minutes and were informed the motorcyclist had lost control of the vehicle. The patient suffered severe fractures to the arms and was loaded into the aircraft and flown to Swindon hospital within 7 minutes.

5th May – At 10:58 the crew was asked to fly a 9 month old child from Warminster to hospital. On arrival the crew were concern that the patient had a severe head injury. With this in mind the decision was made to fly the patient to a specialist head injuries unit. The transit time for this was 14 minutes.

6th May – (Night time) At 19:56 the aircraft was dispatched to an unconscious male. The aircraft arrived within 7 minutes and flew the patient to hospital within 9 minutes.

7th May – At 16:25 the aircraft responded to reports of a child not breathing. The aircraft arrived within 5 minutes of the call. They stabilised the patient and flew the child and father to hospital which took 8 minutes.

9th May – At 18:51 Requested to assist over the border in Somerset (own aircraft off line due to day light hours flying only) to reports of an elderly male fallen onto concrete from flat roof. Following assessment by ground crew, patient had head and chest injuries consequently, decision made to fly patient to Frenchay due to neurological concerns, at A/E within 11mins

9th May – At 14:22 Serious RTC involving 4 vehicles in a rural location on a busy main road. Two patients flown to SDH, 1st patient ( chest and abdo injuries) off loaded at hospital with rotars running in order to allow a quick return to scene for 2nd patient (pelvic injuries). Both patients admitted into A/E within 5 mins of leaving the scene of the accident.
 
11th May – At 17:15 Serious 2 vehicle head on RTC on main duel carriageway, with 1 vehicle on fire, 1 person deceased and another trapped. Hampshire aircraft also at scene, patient with serious bilateral leg injuries flown to SDH via WH99 with other patient being flown by HM56 (Hampshire). Patient in A/E within 5mins.

14th May – At 15:00 Reports of serious RTC van v tractor on major road in rural location, van driver severely trapped and critically injured. Following extrication, patient flown to A/E with serious head injuries. Patient in A/E within 12 minutes from scene.

16th May – At 16:51 Reports of male in cardiac arrest in rural location, assisted crew in resuscitation efforts and patient flown to A/E. Patient in A/E within 10mins, resuscitation efforts being maintained en-route.

16th May – At 18:53 Requested to assist ground crew with patient in wooded rural location with severe leg injury (dislocation/fracture) following fall from mountain bike. Patient flown to A/E within 10mins.

18th May – At 17.18 Requested to attend a single vehicle RTC on M4, patient with spinal injuries. Patient flown to GWH.  Transfer time 5 minutes.

19th May - At 19:20 called out to a14 year old male playing football who was involved in an accident & complaining of neck pain. Flown to RUH, transfer time 5 minutes.

20th May - At 12:45 a 2 year old child suffered a severe asthmatic episode. Dr at scene had nebulised X 2, nearest ambulance at Cirencester. Dr confirmed patient very poorly. Flown to GWH.  Transfer time 5 minutes.

21st May - At 19:58 – Assist South West Ambulance Service with serious double entrapment RTC with total of 3 casualties. Female, 18 years old, with lower spinal pain & possibly been unconscious.  Flown to SDH.  Transfer time 10 minutes.

23rd May – At 10:15 – Requested by ground crew on scene with child with 40% burns following dressing gown caught fire. Patient brought to landing site by crew. Flown to Frenchay. Transfer time 15 minutes.

24th May – At 14:15 called to a Motor Cross accident.  Lumbar back pains after falling off at high speed. Airlifted to GWH.  Transfer time 5 minutes

26th May – At 1:40 (NIGHT TIME HEMS) - At scene within 10 minutes and first at scene.  Single vehicle RTC, car into trees, one patient severe neck pains, pulled from car.  Patient airlifted to SDH. Transfer time 9 minutes.

27th May - At16:44 called to a 2 vehicle high speed impact road traffic collision, extensively trapped and serious injuries.  BASICS’s Dr at scene. Airlifted, transfer time 3 minutes.

29th May – at 15:15 called out to a patient who collapsed outside, with diminished level of consciousness post incident.  No ambulances available to transport patient.  Airlifted to GWH. Transfer time 10 minutes.

07/04/09  16:40hrs – Child fallen off bike & impaled handlebar into leg. Whilst being treated by WH99 paramedic patient moved & handlebar released from leg. Transferred by land vehicle.

08/04/09  17:26hrs – 2 vehicle high speed RTC.  Patient ejected from vehicle. WH99 landed, casualty treated & loaded onto aircraft within 10minutes. Flown to Frenchay with serious multiple injuries. Transfer time 5 minutes.

10/04/09 12:57hrs – Report of female hanging in remote location. Assisted ground ambulance with resuscitation; return of spontaneous circulation, flown to RUH with cardiac output. Transfer time 10 minutes.
  
12/04/09 15:55hrs – Motorcycle in a high speed RTC. Hit road sign, amputated leg, arrested at scene.  CPR provided with cardiac output. Helimed 65 at scene. Flown to Frenchay.

13/04/09 09:50hrs - In Gloucestershire, female thrown from horse onto a wall, instant thoracic back pain.  Weather very poor (Gloucester out of limits). Long boarded and flown to GWH. Transfer time 6 minutes.

13/04/09 11:38hrs - Young lad prone to pneumothoracs, left side diminished air entry.  NO VEHICLES (RRV) nearest Swindon. Brought to unit and flown to RUH.  Transfer time 10 minutes.

13/04/09 14:47hrs - Lady fallen in Swindon.  Possible neck injury.  NO VEHICLES RRV at scene.  Landed - gave patient pain relief and flown to GWH. Transfer time 3 minutes.

13/04/09 16:16hrs - Collapse in Morrison’s.  Unsure of cause, brought to unit flown to RUH.  Transfer time 10 minutes.

14/04/09 15:15hrs - Lady brought to the unit, GCS3, hypothermic (27.1) found by police by her back door.  Unsure of how long she’d been there.  Flown to RUH.  Transfer time 10 minutes.

16/04/09 11:25hrs - Crew brought patient to Hardenhuish Sheldon School, Chippenham. Initially patient in cardiac arrest – airlifted to RUH, having collapsed at railway station.  Transfer time 8 minutes.

27/04/09 - Call to Larkhill medical centre for a male that was tackled which resulted with him hitting his head on some metal railings. He had a base of skull fracture, he was drowsy un-coordinated with slurred speech.  Flown to Frenchay as it’s a specialist Neuro unit.

28/04/09 - RTC with multiple casualties 2 other helicopters also on scene. Our patient female passenger with right side chest injury. Flown to RUH.  Transfer time 5 minutes.

28/04/09 - Female fall from a horse in an inaccessible location. Suspected pelvic injury, and spinal. Flown to GWH.  Transfer time 8 minutes.

MARCH 2009

Monday 2nd March

Horse rider fallen off at the gallop, back pains and rib injury, full spinal immobilisation, airlifted to GWH (incident occurred in an inaccessible area for ground ambulance).  Transfer time 3 minutes.

Male 47 years in cardiac arrest, patient treated at scene and airlifted to GWH. Transfer time 7 minutes

Tuesday 3rd March

Horse rider on Morgan’s Hill, (inaccessible area), exposed area and very cold, suspected fracture to clavicle and scapula, female known epileptic patient, witnessed fit in WH99, airlifted to GWH.  Transfer time 7 minutes.

Thursday 5th March

Male status epilepticus, brought to unit by double manned ambulance for airlift to RUH. Patient monitored and treated on route.  Transfer time 7 minutes

Sunday 8th March

Aircraft called in to assist with a patient that had fallen and fractured their ankle, problem being that it took a Paramedic from a Response Vehicle 30 minutes to get to the patient due to their location – middle of a field near Calne!!
Aircraft was able to land adjacent to incident and assisted the Paramedic in dealing with the patient, who was then taken by WH99 to GWH and was in A/E within 9mins. Also to note that as the sun was going down, temperatures were dropping quickly and the patient was becoming hypothermic.

Tuesday 10th March

Aircraft called to a horse riding incident upon the Marlborough Downs whereby the rider had fallen with the horse subsequently rolling on top of the patient. Patient escaped with relatively light injuries considering the mechanism of the event. Patient was treated at the scene and flown into hospital, being in GWH A/E within 7 minutes.

Wednesday 11th March

Aircraft called to assist with reports of a 14 day old baby cyanosed and floppy in the Tidworth area. Been off her food for a few days, Mum called midwife health visitor who, upon arriving at the address and seeing the baby, dialled 999. Following oxygen therapy the baby’s colour improved but still had a reduced level of consciousness. Mother and baby flown to SDH arriving at hospital within 10minutes

14th March 16:10 – Report of 2 motorcyclists having collided in a rural location, BASICS Doctor requested en route, aircraft on scene within 9 minutes. Both patients assessed & found to be minor injury. Transferred by road to GWH.

16th March 00:30 – Cardiac arrest, crew requested aircraft. Pt conveyed to GWH, transfer time 15 mins. Night HEMS task.

16th March 17:00 – Paraglider in mid-air collision, fallen 15’. Patient complaining of thoracic spine pain. Inaccessible location, aircraft only unit to reach & deal with patient. Spinally immobilised & flown to GWH.

19th March 11:00 – Serious high speed impact RTC, persons trapped. On arrival female severely trapped by legs, difficult & prolonged entrapment. BASICS doctor requested, none available, no other HEMS unit available locally with a doctor. Salisbury Hospital contacted, A&E consultant will attend. Aircraft flown to SDH, picked up Dr &returned to scene. Patient anaesthetised & removed from vehicle after 1.5 hours & flown to SDH, transfer time 4 mins.

22/03/09 at 13:28 the aircraft responded to an incident on Salisbury Plain were a member of the armed forces had suffered severe back pain whilst on exercise. The aircraft was at scene within 7 minutes. The paramedic dealt with the casualty by administering pain relief and applying spinal immobilisation and then they flew the patient to a spinal centre with in 10 minutes. This incident from the time the call came in to the patient being in hospital took just 30 minutes.

25/03/09 at 16:48 the aircraft was deployed to a rugby accident were a male had suffered a head injury earlier during the game and had now collapsed. On arrival the patient was unconscious and was showing signs of a serious head injury. The patient was loaded into the aircraft and flown to a neurological hospital within 13 minutes.

26/03/09 at 17:55 the aircraft responded to a serious road traffic collision. They were at scene within 6 minutes where a patient was extensively trapped within a vehicle. The casualty was trapped for 40 minutes and once release was flown with head and leg injuries to a neurological hospital. The transit time to hospital from the scene was 9 minutes.

27/03/09 at 13:00 the aircraft self tasked to a high speed road traffic collision. The aircraft was the first medical resource at scene. They found two patient, one of which was suffering from a head injury with a lowered level of consciousness. The patient was long boarded and flown to a neurological hospital. The transit time from scene to A+E was 12 minutes.

28/03/09 at 15:23 the aircraft was asked to attend a road traffic collision were a patient was suffering from instant central neck pains. On arrival the patient had already removed themselves from the vehicle before Ambulances had arrival. After a full assessment of the patients injuries we long boarded and flew to a spinal unit within 5 minutes from the scene.

01/02/09 22:13hrs Single vehicle RTC roll over. 2 patients been pulled from the vehicle by passers by. Female passenger with severe leg injuries flown to SDH. This was a very cold night with a blizzard blowing. (night time)

03/02/09 14:35 sledging accident patient slid into a tree. The aircraft was at scene in 10minutes and flew the casualty to RUH with lower back pains. Land crew unable to get to the patient as it was inaccessible by road.

04/02/09 09:38 Patient flown to SDH after suffering from an Acute MI. The crew were unable to convey the patient due to the severe road conditions and distance. (would of taken in excess of 45min) Patient in hospital within 15min.

04/02/09 17:35 A/C deployed to a young female crushed under a horse that had collapsed. The aircraft was first on scene within 8minutes. The young lady was flown to GWH Swindon within 15min. (night time)

07/02/09 1st One from Chippenham Hospital to RUH, 1 month old child with severe SOB. Transfer time was 9 minutes. Family live in the Chippenham area.

07/02/09 2nd Another transfer from Chippenham hospital to Swindon hospital, transfer time 11 minutes. 17 month old child ? Meningitis. Family from Calne.

07/02/09 3rd  At 16:53 the aircraft was dispatched to a sledging accident on a hill side. The land crew couldn’t get to the patient due to the remote location. The aircraft was at the scene first and conveyed the patient to Swindon hospital within 5 minutes. The patient had sustained a fractured leg.

10th February at 02:21 the aircraft was deployed to a male with chest pains. A 12 lead ecg confirmed the patient was having a heart attack. He was thrombolysed and taken to hospital, where he is making a full recovery.

10th February at 15:58 the aircraft attended an emergency in Warminster where an 18 month old child who was having a seizure. The aircraft was at scene first and administered drug therapy to the child. The child was flown to Bath hospital within 10 minutes.

12th February at 23:30 the aircraft attended a 57 year old who was having a heart attack, whilst at scene the patient went into cardiac arrest and was successfully defibrillated. The transit time to hospital was 9 minutes and by the time the patient was in hospital he was alert and talking. (Charlie thinks the Gazette and Herald know about this already, but worth a check).

22nd February at 14:06 - RTC motorcyclist on A350, Lacock, patient unconscious at scene and suffered serious injuries.  BASICS Dr on scene, flown to Frenchay with Dr, transfer time 7 mins.

24th February at 12:30 - 23yr old cardiac arrest in Lydiard Park Swindon. Flown to GWH, transfer time 5 mins.

25th February at 18:35 (night HEMS) – Male with severe leg injury & bleeding. WH99 first on scene & treated, ground crew conveyed.

28th February at 14:35 – Parachutist at Netheravon Airfield had a bad landing. A/C attended & patient flown to GWH with pelvic fracture – transfer time 13 mins.

29th February at 17:32 (night HEMS) – A/C tasked to Golden Ball Hill, Alton Barnes to female having heart attack after paragliding & walking back up hill. Very remote location, ground crew unable to access. Patient flown to GWH, transfer time 9 mins.

A small selection of Air Ambulance Incidents attended during January 2009.

At 13:09 the aircraft responded to a two vehicle road traffic accident (RTC) on the A303, just east of Mere. They arrived at 13:28 to find a patient trapped by his legs. He was trapped for over an hour and once released was flown to Salisbury Hospital within 12 minutes.

The aircraft was deployed to an infant in full cardiac arrest, they arrived at scene within 8 minutes of being tasked. The patient was loaded into the aircraft and flown to the RUH within 4 minutes.

The aircraft was dispatched to a rugby accident where a patient whilst in a scrum, the scrum had collapsed. The aircraft landed at 12:05 and was assessed by the paramedic. The patient was complaining of lumbar back pains and was flown to GWH A&E which took 4 minutes.

During the hours of darkness (17:25) the aircraft responded to a Car V Motorcycle RTC. The aircraft arrived within 5 minutes of the call and was the first medical resource at scene for at least 10 minutes.

 Crew were tasked to reports of an elderly female in ventricular tachycardia following an episode of feeling giddy and collapsing. Patient was dealt with by the ground crew and requested patient be flown to A/E asap, patient taken to SDH.

Out of County, Hampshire – during the hours of darkness.  We were requested by South Central Ambulance Service to assist with a 2 vehicle serious head on RTC in their area. Initial reports of 3 persons having been ejected from the vehicles along with 2 others being trapped. Aircraft able to attend under Casevac rules (Hampshire not having a rotary Police aircraft), BASIC’s at scene. Crew landed at scene and 1 patient was flown to SDH along with a BASIC GP.

During the hours of darkness the Crew were requested to assist land crew with a child suffering from a severe asthma attack, not responding to current drug therapy. On arrival of WH99, patient was in severe respiratory distress, further drug therapy started and patient was flown to GWH.

Whilst en-route to a medical incident WH99 was diverted to a more serious incident, reports of a child fitting in a vehicle. On landing at scene, RRV was dealing with the child, ground crew arrived and happy to deal with following assessment and medical history.

DECEMBER 2008

Patient hit in face by machinery, whilst at work, sustaining fracture to jaw.  Patient spinally immobilised and airlifted to Frenchay.

Female playing hockey at school fell over, hitting head and back.  Patient spinally immobilised and airlifted to SDH.

Female asthmatic patient not responding to treatment and no land ambulance available to convey.  Further medication administered and patient airlifted to GWH.

Young female horse riding has fallen off hitting head and experiencing acute neck pain.  Patient spinally immobilised and airlifted to SDH.

Patient playing rugby sustained lower leg fracture.  Acute pain and patient hypothermic, pain relief given and airlifted to GWH.

Patient slipped on ice banging back of head, base of skull fracture considered.  Patient spinally immobilised and airlifted to Frenchay.

Male collapsed following sudden onset of irregular and rapid heart beat.  Patient had received recent heart surgery.  Patient monitored throughout and airlifted to GWH.

Male patient fallen off of bouncy castle.  Acute pain to left thigh and hip with possible mid-shaft femur.  Pain relief given and patient airlifted to RUH.

DEVIZES – Several purse thefts during the day in Chippenham and Devizes.  Female offender believed to have been seen in Tenovus Charity Shop Devizes.  Search of area made but no trace of offender.

SALISBURY CITY – Assist in search for offenders who had run off from a stolen vehicle after seeing it on fire at Bemerton Heath.

SWINDON CENTRAL – Four offenders made off on foot from stolen vehicle following a pursuit in West Swindon.  One offender arrested by ground units.  Thermal search subsequently located two other offenders who were arrested.

TROWBRIDGE – Assist in search for offenders involved in a robbery at Trowbridge Railway Station where a man had been attacked with an axe.

SWINDON CENTRAL – Whilst over Swindon, assist in search for person seen making off from the rear of a shop in Pinehurst following a burglary, one offender arrested close to premises.

BRADFORD ON AVON – Theft in progress of a large quantity of wood from a location near to Sally in the Wood.  Assist in search for offenders.

NOVEMBER 2008

A small selection of Air Ambulance Incidents attended during November 2008.

Patient trapped legs in machinery.  Consideration of fractures bilaterally to lower legs.  Legs splinted and patient airlifted to RUH.  Patient monitored throughout.

Parachuting incident – main chute and reserve deployed together becoming entangled.  Patient landed heavily on both feet with instant lower back pain.  Patient spinally immobilised and monitored throughout, airlifted to GWH.

Builder working on house received facial and upper limb burns following explosion.  Pain relief administered, burns dressings applied to face and arms.  Patient’s condition monitored throughout and airlifted to Frenchay.

Young male on skateboard ramp slipped off board and hit back and head onto ledge at top of ramp.  Patient spinally immobilised and airlifted to RUH.

Lady walking dog, slipped on muddy bank turning her ankle and hearing a loud crack from it.  Instant pain felt.  Patient given pain relief and airlifted to RUH.

RTC rollover car into ditch – patient trapped for 30 minutes sustaining facial and scalp injuries.  Patient experiencing pain to abdomen and back.  Pain relief and fluid therapy administered, airlifted to Frenchay and monitored throughout.

Patient fallen from horse, being thrown sideways into fence.  Patient complaining of back and shoulder pain and diminished sensation in lower limbs.  Patient spinally immobilised and airlifted to RUH, monitored throughout.

Request from Avon to a Somerset NIGHT TIME request to road traffic collision; motorcyclist versus car.  Traumatic cardiac arrest and despite best efforts, patient sustained injuries incompatible with life.

NIGHT TIME police task for helicopter for vulnerable missing female last seen at 14:00, search commenced with thermal camera.  Female located on edge of farm track.  Nitesun torch used and police units talked into area.  Helicopter landed to give medical assistance.  Patient hypothermic but otherwise not complaining of any injuries.  Ambulance called to transport patient to hospital for further assessment.

Paramedic from unit on response car, first at scene to military RTC.  Patient thrown in to the air after vehicle had gone over a large bump.  Patient complaining of instant lumbar back pain with neurological deficit in both legs.  Pain relief administered and helicopter requested.  Patient airlifted to SDH with further monitoring on route.

Paramedic from unit on response car first at scene to female fallen top to bottom down stairs.  Patient complaining of neck and spinal tenderness and pain in right leg.  Pain relief administered and helicopter requested.  Patient airlifted to SDH with further monitoring throughout flight.

NIGHT TIME – Helicopter first at scene to RTC, lateral impact.  Patient complaining of chest and back pain.  Patient spinally immobilised and airlifted to GWH, continually monitored on route.

Patient fallen 8 – 10ft onto concrete from ladder, striking face and sustaining instant neck pain.  Patient has subsequently become unconscious three times since incident.  Patient spinally immobilised and airlifted to RUH continually monitored throughout.

Horse riding – Patient has fallen from horse whilst jumping fence.  Patient complaining of instant back pain.  Patient spinally immobilised and airlifted to RUH, no ground ambulance available in county at time.

 

A small selection of Police  Incidents attended during October 2008

At Malmesbury requested to assist with a search for a missing elderly female who has been missing for several hours.  Search made using Thermal camera and person located in total darkness in open countryside.  Female suffering from hypothermia and taken to hospital.

Swindon central requested to assist with a search for an offender for a robbery, believed to be hiding in some gardens, search made together with ground units and male located hiding and was arrested.

Chippenham two persons being monitored on CCTV stealing copper from a compound near to Chippenham.  On arrival commence Thermal search.  Two persons located walking away from compound.  Ground units talked into location and two persons arrested.

Outside force area – Air Ambulance task to multi vehicle entrapment RTC on the A369 near Portishead.  Other Air Ambulances also at scene.  One of most seriously injured flown to hospital.

Area search for three ramblers lost in the dark somewhere in the area of Prescombe Down near Swallowcliffe.  Aircraft first at scene and immediately located the ramblers who were then directed to an accessible location and collected by a police vehicle.

Assist with area search in Melksham town for offenders responsible for a number of thefts of vehicles from the local area.  Aircraft located two suspicious cars in the area and their movements were monitored.  Short pursuit ensued when one of the cars failed to stop for a marked police vehicle.  Vehicle stopped and occupants were arrested.

Request to assist with locating a possible rave in the area of Liddington.  Ground units unable to establish the location.  Rave located by WH99 and details of numbers of vehicles and persons established.

Three persons reported to be stealing 4 x 4 vehicles from a compound at West Wilts Trading Estate, Westbury.  On arrival of aircraft, three persons located in compound getting out of vehicle.  On seeing the aircraft, offenders surrendered themselves to ground officers.

Swindon North; assist in search of Toothill for missing 9 year old boy.  Various areas searched and during search missing boy returned to his home address.

Chippenham offender wanted for assault,  Made off from officers.  Attend scene and almost immediately offender came out of hiding and gave himself up to ground unit due to arrival of helicopter.

Patient playing football had high tackle.  Male had fracture dislocation of right lower leg.  Pain relief given, leg splinted and patient airlifted to SDH.

Patient kicked by a horse whilst walking behind animal.  Female sustained an open, compound fracture to right femur.  Wound dressed, pain relief administered.  Patient airlifted to GWH.

Requested by crew at scene to attend and convey male patient who has one tonne slab of concrete fall on legs.  Extensive leg injuries.  Pain relief administered and patient flown to GWH.

 

NIGHT TIME HEMS
Patient trapped in armoured landrover which has rolled over.  Male complaining of pain in back, neck, chest, leg and arm.  Pain relief and fluid therapy administered.  Patient spinally immobilised and airlifted to SDH.

RTC patient ran over by own car.  Extensive lower limb dislocation together with head injury and query other internal injuries.  Leg straightened at scene to good effect.  Patient spinally immobilised and monitored on route to GWH.

RTC Motorcyclist and pillion passenger versus small truck.  Both patients with open fractures of lower legs.  One taken to hospital via land ambulance.  One airlifted to RUH.  Spinally immobilised and monitored on route.

Patient power kiting at Westbury White Horse and landed heavily onto left shoulder.  Pain relief administered and patient monitored and airlifted to RUH.

Request by crew at scene to convey fitting patient.  Drug therapy given to good effect.  Patient conveyed to SDH with medical intervention on route.

 

A small selection of police incidents attended during September 2008:

Assisted in night time search for missing female from Chippenham, concerns for her welfare.

Assist in search for offender involved in smash and grab theft at a jewellers in Swindon.

Salisbury City; commercial burglary on Churchfield Industrial Estate.  Offenders believed hiding nearby, thermal search made.

Attend Hackpen Hill.  Assist in search for four offenders involved in a robbery where a male had been seriously assaulted.

Assist with search for driver of a stolen vehicle who had crashed and made off on foot.  Driver located in a field nearby .  Also provide medical assistance to a horse rider who was thrown from horse after the car crashed.

Elderly alzheimers patient missing from home address for over four hours on pushbike.  Male located using thermal search. Male monitored and ground units advised of male’s location.  Male returned to home address.

Burglary in progress at premises in Swindon.  One person arrested close to railway line, one still outstanding.  On arrival over scene, one person seen lying down next to railway line on thermal imaging person seen to discard item.  Officers directed to location and male arrested and a pair of gloves were recovered.

Self tasked to report of two males in Swindon having entered a premises causing damage with an axe.  Both having left the scene.  Two males matching description located and observations were kept on both.  Containment made until suitable ground units arrived,  two males arrested.

AUGUST 2008

Road Traffic Collision car versus tree persons trapped.  Patient with head injury/fractured skull, car roof against patients head, wrist fracture.  Patient deteriorated so rapid extrication necessary, patient’s level of consciousness gradually improved.   Airlifted to Frenchay.

NIGHT TIME HEMS
Road Traffic Collision.  Patient ejected through rear window of car after overturning.  Patient with head injury, central spine, lumbar pain and lower limb injuries, patient monitored throughout.  Patient airlifted to Frenchay.

Road Traffic Collision.  Motorcyclist and pillion passenger versus car, high speed impact, patient unconscious with head and chest injuries.  Patient spinally immobilised and airlifted to GWH with continuous medical interventions on route.

Once at hospital helicopter asked to return to scene to airlift pillion passenger with spinal injuries.  Patient also conveyed to GWH.

 

NIGHT TIME HEMS
Male with chest pain, (helicopter requested by paramedic at scene), patient then started fitting and went into cardiac arrest – CPR and defibrillation carried out.  Patient consciousness returned, drug therapy given.  Patient airlifted to RUH and further medical assistance and monitoring on route.

Patient having a heart attack at GP’s surgery.  Patient given pain relief and other medication.  Patient airlifted to RUH and further monitoring and medical intervention on route.

Patient fallen from horse at cross country event.  Patient with concussion, helicopter requested by GP at scene.  Patient precautionary spinally immobilised and airlifted to Frenchay, with monitoring on route.

Parachutist exiting aircraft has hit tail plane.  Patient knocked unconscious but recovered 200 feet from landing.  Automatic chute deployed, but heavy landing sustained.  Patient back pain and arm injuries.  Pain relief given and patient airlifted to SDH.

Cyclist fallen whilst going downhill, handlebar into left thigh, arterial bleed.  Leg dressed and IV fluids and analgesia given.  Patient airlifted to RUH and monitored enroute.

 

A SMALL SELECTION OF POLICE INCIDENTS ATTENDED DURING AUGUST 2008
Swindon Central; possible assault and abduction involving transit van. Attend scene, vehicle located but ground units ascertained no offences.

Marlborough; serious domestic assault at Avebury, offender seen to drive away across countryside, search made for vehicle.

Vulnerable and suicidal female missing from Wootton Bassett, whilst searching, female returned home on hearing the aircraft.

Report of persons inside the old Hereod Parkway School in Swindon. Provide containment on the premises for ground units. 3 persons arrested on suspicion of burglary.

Assist ground units with search for a vehicle believed being used to carry a large quantity of controlled drugs in Trowbridge.

Foreign nationals illegally entered UK in the rear of a lorry and located on arrival at business premises in Westbury. Assist with search, containment and arrest of 5 illegal entrants into the country.

NIGHT TIME HEMS
Male received second degree burns to both lower arms and abdomen, 10-15% in total.  Male airlifted to Frenchay with ongoing treatment throughout.

Six year old male status epilepticus, helicopter requested by land crew. Drug therapy given, patient airlifted to GWH.

Allergic reaction - Female swollen tongue and itching.  Drug therapy given and female airlifted to GWH.

Male, left hand caught in machinery.  Full thickness burns to wrist and palm of hand.  Drug therapy given, patient airlifted to Frenchay.

Female patient RTC has gone over handle bars of motorbike, hitting grass verge.  Patient landed on head, complaining of central neck pain with pins and needles,  together with left shoulder pain and right hip discomfort.  Patient immobilised and flown to GWH.

Request from ground crew to male with head injury found in collapsed state at bottom of concrete stairwell.  Patient flown to RUH - no change in patients condition on route, with ongoing treatment throughout.

Patient on inflatable 'ring' being pulled behind boat, boat has slingshot patient into bank at approx. 30mph.  Patient ejected onto bank then fell back into water.  Patient complaining of neck pain and tingling in shoulders, pain to left arm and right rib area and abdomen. Patient flown to GWH, spinally immobilised and monitored throughout.

RTC car v. artic, multiple casualties.  Male ejected from car.  Patient complaining of shoulder and neck pain with noticeable head injury. Patient immobilised, pain relief given and observations undertaken.
Airlifted to SDH.  Quick turn around at hospital to pick up second casualty at same incident.  Second patient initially trapped in vehicle, pale, shocked, concussed complaining of pain to neck and left arm with laceration to face.  Patient monitored and spinally immobilised before also being airlifted to SDH.

A small selection of Police incidents attended during July 2008:

Male offender wanted for criminal damage and theft, seen to run from officers.  Helicopter attended and immediately located two persons on thermal imaging in rear garden.  One then seen to run through garden and over fence at rear.  Units at scene advised and male detained. Identification confirmed as offended and arrested.

Police unit following transit vehicle throwing scrap metal out of vehicle and then attempting to reverse ram police vehicle.  Helicopter requested and on arrival over scene one offender located by ground units.  Search commenced for other two offenders.  After extensive search, two outstanding offenders found hiding in garden shed.
Outstanding vehicle located in nearby car park.  Ground units talked into location.  Cabling and scrap metal recovered.

Missing six year old female not seen for over an hour reported as missing.  Search commenced and female located by helicopter.   Female returned to home address by ground officer.

Report of male with what appeared to be a machine gun.  On arrival of ground units male seen to run into waste ground.  On arrival of helicopter search commenced male located and seen to place items into a nearby skip.  Armed challenge made and male detained, handcuffed and found in possession of an imitation firearm, two pistols and ammunition. Arrested for possession of an imitation firearm in a public place.

JUNE 2008

A small selection of air ambulance incidents attended during June:

Motorcyclist involved in crash involving 3 motorcyclists during race meet.  Male complaining of pain to left shoulder and lumber region.  Patient immobilised and pain relief given, flown to Frenchay hospital and monitored throughout.
 
Male hill walking had sudden onset of chest pain.  Patients' location two miles from any road, WH99 able to locate and land next to patient within six minutes of call.  Pain relief and ECG taken and forwarded via telemetry to receiving hospital, patient airlifted to Great Western Hospital Swindon.
 
Female patient kicked by her horse striking her lower right leg.  On exposing injury an open fracture was visible.  Wound dressed, splint applied and pain relief given.  Patient airlifted to Great Western Hospital Swindon.
 
Male patient had heavy landing at approx 30mph during parachute jump.  Patient experienced instant back pain.  On our arrival, pain relief given and patient immobilised before being airlifted to Salisbury District Hospital with full monitoring of condition on route.
 
Asthmatic patient with acute asthma not relieved by own inhalers.  Ground ambulance requesting our help in a fast airlift to hospital.  Patient brought to helipad and given additional medication, with ongoing monitoring during flight to Great Western Hospital Swindon.
 
Requested to transfer patient with extensive burns from Salisbury District Hospital to Swansea Hospital for more specialist treatment.  Normal road time would be in excess of two hours, WH99 managed to achieve a flight time, door to door of only 50 minutes, with a smoother more comfortable journey for patient.
 
Mobilised to reports of an aircraft having crashed into lake.  On arrival overhead, pilot, (single occupant), non injury and out of aircraft.  Helicopter stood down as not required.
 
Male fallen from scrambling motorbike, ground ambulance unable to reach location due to muddy track.  Patient lower leg open fracture, pain relief given and splinting carried out and male airlifted to Great Western Hospital Swindon.

POLICE JOBS DURING JUNE

Male made off following incident involving a knife and baseball bats.  Offender lost to sight so general search made by WH99.  Male matching description located hiding behind bushes.  Ground units updated and male then observed walking down alleyway between houses.  Units informed and male detained in the alleyway and arrested for affray.
 
Persons seen climbing up scaffolding to get onto roof.  On arrival overhead, thermal imaging camera sighted two males running away before entering a house close by.  Containment on house carried out until arrival of ground units.
 
Report from neighbour of burglary in progress.  Residents away and four to five offenders at scene.  Attended and updated that offenders made off towards village centre.  Group of youths fitting description observed nearby.  Police unit talked into location and details obtained.  All five youths arrested on suspicion of criminal damage.
 
Female in distressed state has left home.  WH99 lifted to commence search and female fitting description located, ground units talked into location and missing female confirmed.

MAY 2008

A small selection of air ambulance incidents attended during May:
 

NIGHT TIME HEMS
Male STROKE patient with sudden onset.  Patient flown to John Radcliffe Hospital Oxford, (24 hour CT scanner), for specialist treatment.  Specialist team awaiting our arrival.
 
3 vehicle Road Traffic Collision; coach v. 2 x cars.  Young male with puncture wound to head with substantial blood loss, and diminishing level of consciousness.  Patient stopped breathing in helicopter on route to the Royal United Hospital.  Assisted ventilations, breathing returned, ongoing medical intervention throughout flight.  Trauma team at RUH contacted and awaiting our arrival.
 
Male fallen 15ft from tree sustaining a back injury.  Pain relieving medication given and patient airlifted to the Royal United Hospital.
 
Motorcyclist v. lamp post at high speed.  Bilateral, complicated, open fractures with extensive tissue damage to legs.  BASIC Dr at scene, medication administered to sedate patient and pain relief to allow both legs to be reset.  Patient airlifted to the Royal United Hospital with ongoing medical intervention throughout flight. 
 
Road Traffic Collision involving elderly male into shallow ditch.  Initially confused and with diminished level of consciousness; caused by a medical cardiac problem.  ECG, observations and vascular access obtained, patient airlifted to the Great Western Hospital in Swindon.
 
Female fallen from standing in garden, hitting greenhouse.  Glass laceration to left flank, with shard having penetrated subcutaneously into patient's back.  Injuries dressed and IV access obtained, patient airlifted to Royal United Hospital Bath with ongoing treatment throughout.
 
Male patient fell from bicycle not able to weight bear; left leg / hip fracture, leg splinted and pain relief administered before airlifted to Royal United Hospital.
 
Paragliding incident at Westbury.  Pilot hit hillside at approx 30mph.  Pain experienced in hip and back.  Full spinal immobilisation and airlifted to Royal United Hospital.

POLICE TASKS

Report of criminal damage in progress.  Group of youths located and officers directed to location.  Group confirmed as those responsible.  All details obtained for further action by local policing team.
 
Known offender wanted for offence of GBH and other offences, sighted by community support officer but made off.  Offender located and monitored from the air and was detained.
 
Requested to assist with suicidal male missing from hospital.  Search commenced, male located in field near M4, units updated and directed to location where male was detained.

Self tasked to report of two males stealing machinery from a farm.  Van made off driving through a fence making off across country.  WH99 First at scene, located transit being driven on a track.  Offenders stopped on seeing helicopter and ground units talked into location.  Metal manhole covers located in rear of vehicle together with other items that had been thrown out of the vehicle.  Two males arrested for theft.

APRIL 2008

A small selection of air ambulance incidents attended during April:
 
Patient head butted by sheep, laceration to forehead, with high probability of head fracture, patient experiencing neck pain.  Full spinal immobilisation together with pain relieving medication given.  Patient flown to Royal United Hospital in Bath. 
 
Diverted from police task in Swindon to entrapment road traffic collision in Warminster.  On arrival patient being extricated from vehicle.  High speed impact into building.  Driver with extensive facial injuries and diminished level of consciousness.  Airlifted to Frenchay with full spinal immobilisation, IV access, fluids and ongoing medical intervention throughout the flight. 
 
Young male fallen from roof in centre of village close to Devizes.  Due to location and unlikely event of helicopter being able to land at location, Paramedic from Air Support Unit responded in unit vehicle.  Arriving first at scene, full medical assistance given to male who, initially, had been unconscious now complaining of back pain.  Full spinal immobilisation carried out, ambulance crew arrived and transported patient to helipad.  Patient then conveyed by helicopter with father to Great Western Hospital, with ongoing medical observation. 
 
Rugby Player with open fracture to lower leg.  Pain relief given, wound dressed,  traction and splint applied, further pain relief given on route, patient flown to Royal United Hospital. 
 
2 vehicle road traffic collision entrapment high speed impact.  Male patient in vehicle barrel rolled over top of other vehicle coming to rest on its side.  Patient trapped for 45 minutes with head injury, complaining of pain in both arms.  Drug therapy given,  full spinal immobilisation carried out and airlifted to Frenchay. 
 
Patient trampled by herds of cows complaining of pain in chest, arms, abdomen and back.  Full spinal immobilisation carried out, patient flown to Royal United Hospital, monitored throughout.
 
Patient had gas cylinder explode whilst lighting a fire.  Our attendance requested by Emergency Care Practitioner in attendance, blistering to both legs and arms patient in severe pain.  Pain relief and full monitoring on route to Salisbury District Hospital.

POLICE TASKS

Whilst airborne report of two males pushing shopping trolley full of lead.  Males quickly located by helicopter, and location given.  On arrival of units to scene, males detained, property recovered and both arrested on suspicion of theft.
 
Ground units including ambulance and fire service having difficulty locating Road Traffic Collision due to scant details given to Ambulance Communications.  RTC located in different town to that given.   Emergency services directed to scene and on their arrival were able confirmed minor injuries only.  Therefore helicopter returned to base as not required in its Air Ambulance role.
 
Self tasked to male believed to be riding stolen motorcycle.  WH99 First at scene, located male and commenced video of incident.  Male made off and threw motorcycle into a river.  Offender than ran into a nearby housing estate entering a house.  Containment of house until arrival of ground units, whereupon search of house made, male confirmed by WH99 as offender and arrested.
 
Self tasked to theft in progress.  One suspect detained others believed to be on rooftop.  Thermal Image search commenced, heat source located and officers directed to location.  2 further suspects located.  Large quantity of lead removed from rooftop.  All arrested for theft.
 
Report of alarm activation at a garage.  On route confirmed burglary in progress.  Vehicle located and stopped by ground unit.  Aerial support and containment provided.  All six arrested on suspicion of burglary.

MARCH 2008

A small selection of air ambulance incidents attended during March:
 
NIGHT TIME HEMS
Male in his 40's in cardiac arrest.  Requested by land ambulance to assist.  Full treatment and airway management given and airlifted to Great Western Hospital.
 
2 vehicle road traffic collision.  Female involved and complaining of instant neck pain with numbness in hands.  Airlifted to Salisbury District Hospital with full spinal immobilisation carried out.
 
Young male fitting.  Full medical intervention carried out.  Male regained consciousness complaining of frontal head pain, with a high temperature.  Airlifted to Royal United Hospital Bath.
 
NIGHT TIME HEMS
Road traffic collision involving female motorcyclist, mid 20's.  Patient hit windscreen of car and landed 20ft from impact.  Patient full spinal immobilisation at scene, with fracture to pelvis and injuries to legs.  Airlifted to Great Western Hospital Swindon with fluid therapy, and continuation of treatment on route.
 
Fall.  Male fallen in bathroom at home injuring neck.  Complaining of back pain with pins and needles in arms and legs.  Full spinal immobilisation, drug therapy and continuation of medical care given on route and airlifted to Salisbury District Hospital.
 
Horse rider.  Female fallen from bucking horse, horse then stood on her back.  Discomfort to coccyx area.  Full spinal immobilisation carried out and patient airlifted to Salisbury District Hospital.
 
Body boarding.  Male body boarding on tarmac track could not stop and went feet first between a barrier and protection bail.  Pain to back and full spinal immobilisation, drug therapy and full medical treatment given on route to Salisbury District Hospital.
 
Ambulance engine fire.  Requested to assist colleagues as vehicle broken down.  Patient on board very unwell with episodes of convulsions.  Airlifted to Royal United Hospital in Bath.
 
POLICE TASKS
Requested to assist with missing child.  Daylight and thermal image camera used during search.  Male and child located waving at aircraft found to be the missing child safe and well.
 
Reports of a female having run away from home address taking pills and stating she wanted to kill herself.  Female fitting description viewed on daylight camera, police ground units directed to location and confirmed it was the missing female safe and well.
 
Report of male having made off from the scene of a road traffic collision.  Male fitting description found walking along a track.  Ground units directed to location and male arrested for road side alcohol.
 
Reports of two males possibly stealing cable.  Given various locations to search and after a short while two persons seen in a field running along field boundary and out onto a road before changing direction and going back in the opposite direction.  Vehicle seen to stop close to persons and both viewed getting into rear seats.  Vehicle then followed by helicopter where it was stopped by a dog handler and all four persons on board arrested for various offences.

FEBRUARY 2008

A small selection of air ambulance incidents attended during February:

Aircraft called out to a 2 vehicle road traffic collision, (RTC), persons trapped.  At scene, car driver was trapped by his legs and had a very large head injury with diminished level of consciousness.  Patient had obvious fractures to legs and arms.  Full medical treatment and spinal immobilisation was carried out before being flown to Frenchay hospital.
 
Later the same day, the helicopter responded to another 2 vehicle (RTC), again persons trapped with car on fire.  Helicopter at scene within 6 mins.   Dr at scene performing CPR on patient.  Despite extensive efforts the patient was pronounced dead.
 
Aircraft called out to horse riding incident, horse had reared up and fell on patient, landing on pelvic area.  Patient heard loud crack from his left hip area.  Patient received pain relief and spinal immobilisation at scene.   Patient was airlifted to Salisbury District Hospital with a fracture to hip/pelvis.
 
NIGHT TIME HEMS
Requested to attend military accident, male fallen from lorry onto head.  Patient complaining of neck and back pain.  Full spinal immobilisation carried out and patient airlifted to Salisbury District Hospital.
 
NIGHT TIME HEMS
Requested by land ambulance to a Female convulsing.  Full drug therapy and airway management carried out, patient airlifted to Great Western Hospital.  Patient monitored throughout.
 
Called to RTC involving young male child knocked off of push bike.  High suspicion of fracture to leg, patient given pain relief, spinally immobilised and leg splinted.  Patient flown to Royal United Hospital and monitored throughout.
 
NIGHT TIME HEMS
Request from rapid response vehicle (RRV) paramedic, to convey patient suffering with severe life threatening asthma.  Unfortunately there were no ground ambulance available to transport patient at the time.  As one of only two air ambulances in the country able to carry out night time work, we were able to assist and fly patient to Salisbury District Hospital.
 
 
A small selection of police tasks carried out during February:
 
Called to locate suicidal female threatening to self harm.  After an extensive search a heat source was located using thermal imaging camera.  Ground units were talked into the location and heat source was found to be the missing female.  After being checked by ambulance staff, the female was taken to a place of safety.
 
Request by firearms unit to provide over-head containment at a house, reports of firearms inside building.  Search carried out and person subsequently arrested.

Whilst over head town West Wiltshire, report of males acting suspiciously possibly dealing drugs.  One male detained and arrested at scene, further male seen running from incident carrying bag.  Containment provided and units directed to location.  Male located hiding in garden shed.  Male arrested on suspicion of theft.

JANUARY 2008

Air Support Unit paramedic on rapid response vehicle at scene of 85 year old male fallen in driveway.  Pt cold and in considerable pain with upper leg fracture.  Pain relief and fluid therapy given.  WH99 requested to assist; on arrival patient flown to Great Western Hospital in Swindon.

Road traffic collision, car versus cyclist, high speed impact.  Patient unconscious medical intervention at scene prior to rapid extrication to Royal United Hospital.
 
Horse rider  thrown from horse, unresponsive for three minutes having landed on head.  No obvious injuries noted.  Patient airlifted to Royal United Hospital.
 
NIGHT TIME HEMS:  Aircraft self tasked to reports of a pedestrian who had been struck by a car.  We landed at Clarendon School in Trowbridge one of our designated landing sites at night.  The patient sustained head and spinal injuries.  We loaded the patient into the aircraft and he was flown within eight minutes to an awaiting trauma team at Frenchay Hospital in Bristol.
 
NIGHT TIME HEMS:  Initial report of a four month old not breathing.  Overhead of scene, update from 'Communications' that situation not as serious as first believed, crew arrival at scene and happy to deal.
 
Patient playing rugby received high tackle.  Instant pain to right side and burning pain down side of neck.  Full spinal immobilisation and flown to Royal United Hospital.

POLICE TASKS

Vehicle overturned north of County, five persons made off from vehicle.  Area search commenced.  Four persons located ground units talked into location.  Person arrested for taking vehicle without consent and road side alcohol.
 
Aircraft requested to assist with flood planning, as a result of heavy rain all details and observations passed to communications.
 
Reports of persons stealing lead made off on quad bike, whilst enroute the bike was located by ground unit with engine still running.  Thermal image search of the area made and two persons located in trees, units directed to location and two arrested.

DECEMBER 2007

West Wiltshire area, 3 vehicle road traffic collision, one of which high speed into tree.  Patient extensive de-acceleration injuries and in cardiac arrest.  Extensive treatment and procedures carried out before being flown to Salisbury District Hospital.

South Wiltshire area, female attacked by large dog sustaining numerous bite wounds.  Patient lying injured for over an hour before alarm was raised, patient very hypothermic, flown to Salisbury District Hospital.

Police task at night-time in Wootton Bassett.  Two persons decamped from car failing to stop for police units.  Driver detained by ground units our assistance requested to search for passenger.  Search commenced using thermal camera with offender located.  Police ground units talked into location by police air observer.  Male arrested.

Requested by rapid response unit at Westbury White Horse, to horserider sustaining kick to lower leg by horse whilst riding another!  Patient very fearful of flying but with a likely fracture and being hypothermic was brave enough to accept a rapid trip to the Royal Unit Hospital in Bath!

NOVEMBER 2007

Our ability to fly at night meant we were able to convey an unconscious, serious ill female who had fallen down a flight of stairs.  With an extensive head injury we were able to fly her direct to the specialist neurological unit at Frenchay hospital.

Requested on a police task with reports of a pursuit involving a BMW car failing to stop on M4.  Overhead of vehicle we were able to monitor using our camera equipment and provide police units on the ground location information.  The vehicle headed onto the M32 towards Bristol where it was involved in a collision.  The driver then 'decamped'  from the vehicle before being detained by police officers.  Video evidence was captured throughout.

Requested by ground units to a female having slipped down an embankment whilst out walking in the Salisbury area.  Sustaining a fracture to her leg she was in considerable pain and hypothermic.  Due to her location, the ground ambulance was unable to get within half a mile of the incident.  Patient was given pain killing drugs at scene and airlifted to Salisbury District Hospital.

Requested to scene of an air accident, male fallen 30' whilst flying a Paramotor.  Patient complaining of immediate back pain and loss of sensation from waist down.  Treated at scene and flown to Frenchay.

Requested to attend high speed 2 vehicle road traffic collision.  Massive intrusion into the car compartment, one patient in cardiac arrest the other having such extensive injuries they were incompatible with life.

Called to air accident involving a glider near Swindon.  Patient initially trapped in wreckage, released and having received treatment by paramedics at scene was flown to Great Western Hospital with injuries to lower legs.

West Wiltshire area, young male fallen from scrambler motorbike, complaining of abdominal pain.  Ground ambulance at scene requesting paramedic assistance to deliver stronger pain relief.  WH99 landed at scene to facilitate.   With a splenic rupture considered, patient was airlifted to Salisbury District Hospital.

WH99 first at scene to Golf course near Marlborough.  Report of  patient collapsed with cardiac history.  Treatment and diagmostic equipment used at scene prior to patient being airlifted to Great Western Hospital for further tests.


OCTOBER 2007

Called to North Wiltshire area to rugby player tackled with pain to neck and back. Spinal immobilisation and treatment provided prior to airlift to Royal United Hospital Bath.

Tasked to male fallen 22' from tree onto concrete, pain to back and leg. Spinal immobilisation and treatment provided prior to airlift to Royal United Hospital Bath.

Tasked by Police to railway line thermal search carried out, body subsequently located. Ground units talked into location and scene illuminated by use of 'nitesun'.

Tasked by Police to report of male with mental health issues seen with shotgun. Male located by aircraft and officers talked into location, male detained.

Police task, helicopter responding to report of stolen vehicle. Vehicle located, followed and commentary provided to ground units. Eventual 'decamp' from vehicle aircraft providing containment, assistance from Dorset aircraft due to low fuel level. Male and female detained.

Tasked by Ambulance to Golf course to male complaining of chest pains. Due to location on fairway ground crew requiring assistance. Pain relieving medication together with diagnostic equipment showing cardiac episode. Patient received clot busting drugs prior to being airlifted to Royal United Hospital Bath.

Police task report of two illegal entrants decamped from lorry and ran into trees. Suspects located and ground units talked into location, both arrested.

Road traffic collision involving motorcyclist head on into minibus. Patient hypoxic due to head injury causing patient to be combative at scene. Medication and treatment administered at scene before airlifting to Royal United Hospital Bath.

Requested to attend reports of rollover road traffic collision with ejection from vehicle. Four casualties at scene, aircraft airlifting to Royal United Hospital Bath with treatment carried out at scene and throughout flight.

Called to patient who had partially amputated digits to hand. Treatment and pain relieve administered and patient flown to specialist unit at Frenchay hospital.


SEPTEMBER 2007

Call made to police by female walking her dog on bridleway who became surrounded by large dogs attacking her and her dog. Aircraft launched female located still surrounded by dogs. Aircraft able to land next to female, police observer onboard able to disperse dogs. Female and dog suffered several puncture wounds. Female received treatment from paramedic onboard. Ground units talked into remote location to make further enquiries.

Call to police to search for vulnerable male missing from home. Male located, aircraft landed at scene with police observer and paramedic attending male prior to returning him to safety.

Night-time HEMS task. Aircraft first at scene of road traffic collision. Patient found some distance from vehicle unclear whether ejected. Airlifted to Great Western Hospital in Swindon with treatment provided throughout.

Requested to Road Traffic Collision, motorcyclist hit stationary 4 x 4 and thrown through its rear window. Patient complaining of spinal pain and fracture to arm. Spinal immobilisation, pain relieving drugs and further treatment given throughout flight to Salisbury District Hospital.

Tasked to West Wiltshire reports of patient discovered by work colleagues unconscious in car. Overdose suspected and patient airlifted to Salisbury District Hospital with treatment provided.

Patient brought to helipad at police headquarters with multiple stab wounds in cardiac arrest. Advance Life Support carried out during flight to Great Western Hospital Swindon.

Called to Center Parks to patient collapsed in swimming pool. Treatment provided and patient airlifted to Royal United Hospital in Bath for further treatment.

Tasked to male dragged by car trapping him between bodywork and door. Male trapped by chest, semi conscious and suffering with hypoxia. Patient airlifted to Great Western Hospital with improvement to conscious level noted on route.

Helicopter launched to report of persons breaking into premises. 2 vehicles located at scene and on approach of helicopter both moved off in different directions. Both vehicles were monitored by crew and police ground units were updated and offending vehicles stopped. Six persons from both vehicles arrested on suspicion of burglary.

Tasked to Swindon area to patient trapped against fence post by a tractor mower, complaining of severe abdominal pains. Treatment given prior to airlift to Great Western Hospital.

- Tasked to South Wiltshire area to patient out rambling disturbing a wasps' nest and receiving multiple stings, patient airlifted to Salisbury District Hospital.


AUGUST 2007

Report of vehicle on motorway with persons on board being held against their will. Vehicle located and containment provided whilst traffic units arrested two persons for false imprisonment.

Report of Parachutist receiving heavy landing. Patient complaining of pain to lower spine, full spinal immobilisation and treatment provided, patient conveyed to Salisbury District Hospital.

Patient found electrocuted, CPR in progress. Full Advanced Life Support carried out throughout and patient flown to Great Western Hospital.

Call from Disabled male driving mobility scooter broken down in middle of farmland unsure of exact location. Aircraft lifted to search for male and quickly located him. Landed at scene and assistance provided to male and his scooter!

Reports of paving slab having been put through public building. Ground units at scene witnessed male inside premises. Aircraft provided containment of building, male subsequently arrested.

Airborne to paragliding accident, pilot having a canopy collapse at 50ft. Pilot's harness contained 'air bag' system, providing some cushioning to fall. Patient found to have fracture to ankle, no other obvious injury. Due to inaccessible location, patient airlifted to Great Western Hospital.

Night time HEMS task, aircraft called to single vehicle road traffic collision car leaving road, landing on roof. Patient self extricated but found lying down at road side. Patient complaining of being short of breath, with abdominal and back pain with numbness from waist down. Patient conveyed to Great Western Hospital with spinal immobilisation and treatment provided throughout.

Call made to police during early hours of morning from security staff at Stonehenge having problems with male found on site. Search commenced and male quickly located using thermal imagery, scene illuminated with 'nitesun', male subsequently detained.

Request by ground ambulance to assist patient having 'fit'. Drug medication given and patient airlifted to Royal United Hospital.
