Trek the Great Wall of China

21 - 30 September 2017 Trek the Great Wall of China

We’re seeking intrepid explorers to join us for the challenge of a lifetime, as we take on one of the most iconic landmarks on earth.

Stepping out across the semi-ruins of a section of the Great Wall is like walking in the footsteps of the past. Far from the tourist crowds, you’ll get a great sense of the scale and the majesty of this remarkable piece of engineering without rushing through. This Great Wall Challenge has plenty of exciting twists, turns, ups, downs and steps! As you trek along several contrasting sections of the wall in the company of our experienced guide, you will get closer to day-to-day life in rural China, before returning to Beijing, a city steeped in history yet plunging headlong into modernity.

The Great Wall is a firm fixture on many bucket lists…what better way to experience it than as part of our team, raising funds to help us save lives across Wiltshire.

Is it for me?

If you are reasonably fit and have an adventurous spirit, the short answer is YES!

Many of the people who have taken part in previous overseas treks with us have never done anything like it before – and they vary from regular hikers to complete novices.

To complete the Great Wall Trek comfortably, it will certainly help to have done some training walks in advance. The walking is not technically difficult, but you must be a confident walker with a good level of fitness in order to manage the long duration of the trek, combined with carrying your backpack every day.

During the challenge you will be:

  • Trekking for around 5-7 hours per day
  • Covering approximately 60kms over 5 days.
  • Continually hiking up and down thousands of stairs.
  • Battling the heat on exposed sections of the wall (temperatures can reach the mid-20s).
  • Trekking on un-renovated sections of the wall, with crumbling steps, shrubbery and rocks underfoot, and steep stair climbs.
  • Taking on sections at height with drops at either side.
  • Staying in basic lodges each night.
You will need to be available 21st - 30th September 2017
Why fundraise for Wiltshire Air Ambulance?

People take part for all sorts of reasons. Some because it’s a great value way of trekking with an experienced guide in otherwise remote areas. Some want to push themselves out of their comfort zones. Some just want an amazing adventure. But all enjoy a real sense of camaraderie from trekking with others, and come away with the satisfaction of knowing they have made a real difference to the people of Wiltshire and surrounding counties.

Wiltshire Air Ambulance receives no central government funding, so the sponsorship you raise will help ensure that we can be there for anyone who lives, works or travels in Wiltshire when they need us most. And we’ll be there to support you in every step of your preparations!

As well as providing training guides, kit lists and plenty of fundraising support, we host fun and informal social events, training walks and a Facebook group, so that you can get to know  your fellow trekkers online and offline!

How much does it cost?

There are two payment options for this trek, see below for details. To discuss these options in more detail please call the fundraising team on 01380 739453
